Historic Red Hills Plantation Neighboring Ted Turner’s Avalon Plantation Hits Market for $10.7 Million

Oakhill Plantation, Thomasville, GA

Thomasville, GA --- Oak Hill Plantation, a 1,000+ acre Red Hills plantation bordering Ted Turner's flagship property and home, Avalon Plantation, has hit the market for $10.7 million.

Oak Hill boasts a pristine 15-acre lake fed by a natural spring, rich and diverse ground cover, and quail habitat with beautiful rolling topography. The 8,000 sq. ft. Greek Revival main house was built by Skip Sheffield, a premier plantation home builder.

The estate also features a 1,600 sq. ft. guest house/manager's house, a gathering lodge, and an array of other impeccable improvements.

T.K. Wetherell
Owned by T.K. and Virginia Wetherell since 1991, Oak Hill Plantation has not been formally on the market since the 1820's.

T.K. was President of Florida State University from 2003-2010 and served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1980 to 1992.

Virginia served as Secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection from 1991 to 1998 and previously served as a state legislator.

“Years of capital improvements and diligent maintenance have created not only a very beautiful and park-like property but one that is very easy to manage,” said listing broker Jon Kohler.

“The current owners have been grooming and manicuring this property for nearly 30 years making this is a rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful Red Hills plantation, with excellent location, rich history, a stunning plantation home, and perhaps more ancient Live Oak trees than any other property in the region.

The stunning 8,000+/- square foot home features five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and four working fireplaces. There is a formal living room, formal dining room, library with built-in bookcases and attached reading area, family room with dining area, a "lounge" room with a custom cypress bar, kitchen and informal dining room.

The screened in back porch overlooks the beautiful backyard with a water feature and gazebo. There is a second-floor front porch that overlooks beautiful views of the lake that create stunning sunrise and sunsets. The detached three car garage was built to look like a carriage house.

"It should be no surprise that Florida’s ‘First Couple of Conservation's’ home place is as ecologically and historically unique as Oak Hill,” said Kohler.  I would argue that no two people have made as much of a difference to Florida’s natural lands than T.K. and Ginger Wetherell.

What they have found, nurtured and developed at Oak Hill is fitting to their dedication."
